In the Heart of the city? Have no fear, as this walk along the river Exe just outside central Exeter is perfect for getting your mind out of the metropolis and into the sights of canal locks and elegant water birds. The walk is accessible for almost everyone as there are flat areas for wheelchairs. The only disruption to this could be some of the stony paths with loose small rocks but this should not get in the way of a lovely adventure. Along the canal and riverside, you will find an array of wildlife such as the Kingfisher, Grey Heron, Grey Wagtail, Swans, Mallard and many other bird species. In the summer, the fields/meadows next to the river are filled with wildflowers such as ox eye daisies. Park at the Countess Wear carpark that juts off Bridge road just up from the Exeter University Rowing Club and Double Locks pub. From here, you enter the park and follow the large path provided. However, ventures off the path are allowed and dogs are allowed to roam off lead here. You then follow this path along the river all the way along until you reach a lane via the path. Once on the lane, turn left to follow the canal back to the car park. It is best to have your dog on lead here as there is a busy road leading to double locks and to keep the dogs dry! Moving forward, as long as the canal is on your right you will arrive back at the car park. However, walking along this canal section is where you are likely to see most of the bird species so here you can take your time and take in herons or the social activities of the swans and mallards. It is a peaceful walk where you can enjoy nature whilst getting away from the hustle and bustle of Exeter.
